Professional sandblasting can help to clean and prepare steel surfaces prior to the galvanising process.
Certain steel products or materials will require sandblasting before they can be hot-dip galvanised. One example may be where the surface has old paint, dirt, lacquer or other imperfections. Items that require coating thicknesses over and above AS/NZS 4680 (2006) or are made of high strength alloy steels may also require sandblasting prior to galvanising.
Abrasive cleaning is the preferred method of surface preparation for materials with existing coatings, such as lacquer, or those that have aged and are going through re-coating. This is carried out prior to going through hot-dip galvanising treatment and our team can consult on project needs to determine if sandblasting might be required. Doing this readies the material creating a lightly roughened surface for adequate adhesion of heavy-duty protective coatings. Where a specification requires a high micron coating above AS4680:2006, sandblasting may be recommended.
Sandblasting or abrasive blasting with a fine garnet grain helps to clear away paint, lacquers, concrete and dirt, leaving an incredibly smooth surface. This step can help to increase the pick-up of zinc during the galvanising process. For those items that require abrasive blasting prior to galvanisation, Galserv can take delivery and arrange for professional sandblasting through our partner facility. We can then complete the process of hot-dip galvanizing, managing each step of the process for you.
