Galserv proudly nominated the Sorel Award for our work on the Arnolds Creek Project

It’s always an honour to be nominated for an award and we’re especially proud of our nomination for the 2022 Sorel Design Awards, for our work on the Shade Structure for the ‘Reimagine Arnolds Creek’ project in Melton, Wathaurong Country, 50km north-west of Melbourne.

Galserv was engaged by Fleetwood Urban, the designers of the shade structures of the community space, to galvanise a custom steel arbour that sits on the spot where two local creeks meet.

Made up of a series of arches, the structure looks like a skeleton, while creating a range of shading options that change and evolve with the sun.

How we did it

To complete this project, 10 tonnes of hot-dip galvanised steel was used to create the 30 long steel arches. And while each arch may look the same, a closer look reveals that there’s minute variations across each one, using various components of different sizes and bends to deliver a project that feels unique and alive.

Fleetwood Urban chose to work with us due to the complexities of the galvanisation process. Given its prominent place exposed to the elements, the arbour needed a finish with a long life. It needed to be robust and reliable and require minimal upkeep across its lifetime.

But it also needed to look stunning.

It was a complex project to work on, as each piece of the arbour was a different size—there was nothing stock standard about it. Upon galvanisation, it needed to have a continuous and seamless finish.

Made from a series of hollow pipes, it required a steady hand to ensure no pockets of air were trapped in the design. So before galvanizing, each piece was grit sand blasted, giving it a more consistent finish. We then galvanized each piece individually, to ensure the best possible quality of finish free of zinc runs.

Sitting in Arnolds Creek Park, it’s a striking feature that draws the eye—showcased in the video below:

A history of awards

This isn’t the first time we’ve been nominated for the prestigious Sorel Design Award. In fact, we’ve been awarded the winner the Sorel Design Award twice.

  • 2022 – Nominee – Sorel Design Award – Arnolds Creek Project
  • 2021 – Nominee – Sorel Design Award – Julia Reserve project
  • 2015 – Winner – Sydney Boathouse project
  • 2015 – Nominee – Global Galvanizing Awards (InterGalva) – Scenic World project
  • 2014 – Winner – Sorel Design Award – Scenic World project
  • 2013 – Nominee – Sorel Design Award – Thornleigh Gold Centre project

But we don’t do this for the awards—we do it to make our customers successful and because we’re exceptional at what we do.
